Upper-Intermediate_B2: 5th Session_Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

Dear members of the Reading Club,

It's time to post your comments about what you have read during this week.

So, please, choose 1 question to answer from the following ones:

a) Why was Edward Hyde found dead dressing in clothes that were much too large for him, and in his hand he held a small bottle?

b) The doctor had left all his money, not to Edward Hyde, but to Gabriel John Utterson. Do you have any ideas about it?

c) What do you think about Dr. Jekyll's decision to poison himself and die?

d) What would you have done if you had been Dr. Jekyll?

e) Give a different ending to the story.

Then, choose a partner to interact with and reply to his/her post.

Best,

Jimena Rivadeneira, MA. TEFL.

  1. c) Well, in the end of the book Dr. Jekyll was already losing his identity and humanity, converting in a beast and a murderer when he was Mr. Hyde. Also, he was afraid what Mr. Hyde might do with his friends and the society, for that reason I think he preferred to finish this suffering and Hyde's life.

    1. I think about Dr. Jekyll decision was an unexpected decision. Although, I believed he wanted Edward Hyde to pay his crimes. Dr. Jekyll felt guilty about creating another character, but later he realized his discovery wasn't true because the discovery had an unknown component put in by the chemical supplier.

    2. Yes, I think that at the time of a meltdown, poisoning was the easiest and quickest choice. But when Jekyll started to see problems, he could have look for help from experts.

  2. 1) Because Edward Hyde was other character from Dr. Jekyll. When he drank a dosis of poison, he changer his body to convert to Edward Hyde with features such as height small, hard voice, and different person with a bad aptitude.

    1. Yes, I actually think that Mr.Hyde could make a bad decision using that money because his actions weren´t from a normal person and already caused so much trouble.

  4. e)Another good and exciting ending could be that Dr. Lanyon takes Dr. Jekyll´s case and tries to understand the experiment and the real chemical substance that makes that effect on people.

    1. That's a interesting ending. It can even lead to a series of books, who knows... :P

    2. I would have liked that ending because Dr Lanyon's character didn't have much prominence in the case of Dr. Jekyll and just was a viewed in the final before dead. In the other hand, in my case Lanyon's dead was very strange because I didn't understand why his situation worst a lot after saw Dr. Jekyll converted in Mr Hyde.

    1. I think that Dr. Jekyll was going through a lot of trouble, which kept him from thinking clearly, and with Hyde gone, it made his mind more confused, leading him to take the potion.

  6. c) I mean, he was in a very difficult position at the end. It was a very coward choice... there's always one thing left to try.

  7. b) I think Doctor Jekyll gave all his money to Utterson, because as a rush decision the first person that came up to his mind was a close friend, Utterson. He did not want it to waste, but a wiser decision could have been to donate it to charities

    1. Yes, I agree with you but also maybe we have to keep in mind that Utterson was the only person that knew the truth. He was the only one he could trust.

    2. I'm totally agree with you, especially about donate his money.

  8. e) It would have been a different story if instead of committing suicide, Mr. Hyde had sought help. His mental illness would have been treated and he would have had another chance to make amends. I think this could be a very possible alternative ending because he had plenty of money for treatment of mental illness.

    1. Yes but also they will know the truth about that awful experimentation and he will be critized by the scientific community.

    2. I am not pretty sure, because what he did was out of the cientific community knowledge, so even if he had all the money of the world, it would be like asking the cure for dead.

    3. That sounds good. But if we remember, Mr. Hyde was pure evil, he did not have anything good in his personality. But he could try.

    4. Yes, I agree with you. He could have treated his sickness because of his money and even pay people to keep his secret.

  9. c) It´s hard to say that what he did was wrong, but maybe from his perspective it was the only way, trying to put yourself in his situation, he was persecuted by the police, and now he´s last friend would see him in that state, it would be even worse than dying, because all the good things you´d done would be covered by the wrong decisions you made.

  10. c) If we focus on actions about Mr. Hyde, Jekyll chose the best decision, because Hyde will gonna take total control of doctor over time, if Jekyll would not have made that decision, his evil part would have been a total threat to the city.

  11. b) I think Mr. Hyde knew that as he had a different appearance than Dr. Jekill, he could not receive the inheritance of Dr. Jekill, so he planned to left all of his money to him when Dr. Jekill died. But Dr. Jekill knew that, so did a different will to Mr. Utterson, because he knew that he was a good person, and that he would use the money in a better way.

  12. b) I consider that in an act of desperation he left his money to Mr Utterson because he was the only person who managed to put all the pieces together and the only friend he had left.

    1. I think the same, even He could ask for help to utterson before he killed a person.

  13. b)I think He gave his money to utterson because ,he was worried about him and he was a close friend that helped him in the last problems to Dr. Jekyll.

  14. In Dr. Jekyll's position, I would have made a better decision about what to do with my life, to keep better control, and also not to leave my stuff scattered all over the place, without an order, I would have left it in a way that people who need it, can make use of it.
