Upper-Intermediate_B2: 1st Session_Jack The Ripper by Foreman Peter

Dear members of the Reading Club,

It's time to post your comments about what you have read during this week.

So, please, choose 1 question to answer from the following ones:

a) Why did Jack choose Mary Ann Nichols, an "unfortunate woman" as his victim?

b) Why did Carpenter Albert hear a voice in the yard saying "No!" and a sound like that of somebody falling against the fence but never looked to see what it was?

c) What, in your opinion, could have motivated Jack to murder women?

d) Which could have been a good strategy to capture Jack The Ripper?

e) Have you ever heard about a similar murderer before? If so, describe him briefly.

Then, choose a partner to interact with and reply to his/her post.

Best,

Jimena Rivadeneira, MA. TEFL.

    1. Probably, but he was a cruel murderer after all. I think he had a complicated childhood, maybe a woman abuse him at a young age. That's why he had a deep hate towards women.

    2. I think that this thought is valid. I mean, all of the murderers have a bad idea of what the other's life is, and they think their idea is the right one. But it could also be that he had childhood problems with women. The idea of an abuse is something in common in murderers, so I think it could be the reason.

  2. e) I have heard about murderers in many documents. One of them is Charles Manson, he was not that similar to Jack the Ripper, because he made a cult in which he planned to murder people from Hollywood.

  3. e) I have heard of clinical cases about people that are born without feeling any affection or empathy for others. In other words, their brain dont generate signals or hormones to feel guilty when they hurt other human being.

    1. This is very interesting because there has always being the interrogative of killers being made or born. It is really helpful to know that some genetic errors can cause this severe disease and maybe scientist can learn more about it to have an early diagnosis for this people.

  4. a) I think Jack chose Mary Ann because maybe he thought of her as a vulnerable woman. Also, because of her situation of being "unfortunate" he could think that she wouldn´t be missed. Regardless of the situation, we could say that for Jack killing petite and young women make him feel powerful and that is why he kept commiting the same pattern of crimes.

    1. I agree with you! Jack´s victims were all vulnerable and with tragic past that make them like invisible socially talking. Jack knew that his victims wouldnt be a spot or attention for the people.

    2. That´s a good point, and it could be a clue, because the other women who were murdered didn´t have like a lot of people who cared for her , so maybe the policemen should pay more attention to the women who meet that porfile

    3. Yes, indeed. He was always looking out for this kind of vulnerable woman due to their facility of tracking her down or maybe because they woudn't fight so much for her final destiny... maybe It's what I can say based on the session of today

  5. b) maybe because he could think that was nothing important like someone falling or maybe a pet making noise

  6. d) A good strategy could have been using a decoy to bait him. A prostitute in a familiar situation to Jack sounds very practical in my opinion. Maybe it could have worked... but who knows.

    1. I partially agree with you because it's a practical idea but the life of women will be at risk, and nothing secure the healthy of her.

  7. c He had no reason to murder those woman's, they were only poor people with some social problems, even if they were at early hours in the morning, drunk and alone that are no reasons to murder someone. In addition, he always choose woman's in specifically range of age, that's weird, for that, how a partner said, he probably has mental issues.

    1. Hi! Sorry, I didn't see you in the zoom chat :,(.
I agree with you, only a disturbed and sick man would do that. Some traumas destroys people.

  8. a) I think that he chose her because she met the characteristics of his desired porfile, but also due to the environmental conditions were quite optimal to murder her without been noticed.

    1. I agree with you, the woman was alone and the place was dark it was a good opportunity to murder her.

  9. C) Maybe he was interested in a butcher's job and combining the fact that he was a mental illness, so this combination wouldn't turn out in something good.

  10. b)I think that Carpenter Albert never looked to see what it was, because he lived in a building with more than 10 people and it was a crowed and busy place.

  13. c) I can assume by his crimes that he had a trauma with women ,perhaps something related with childhood issues.

    1. Yes, I agree with you. As a psychopath he did not have an specific reason but an event in his childhood could have made him go for women of a certain age.

    2. I agree with you because that's is the only reason that I can see. Maybe, he thinks his actions are favors to the society even if all these crimes brings terror in the streets.

  14. b) I think that Carpenter Albert was busy because he was prepared to go his job, because of he didn't find out what voice or noise was

  15. Have you ever heard about a similar murderer before? If so, describe him briefly.

Tsutomu Miyazaki or also known as The Otaku Killer, was a Japanese serial killer. Miyazaki kidnapped and murdered four girls between the ages of four and seven. His crimes involved sexual abuse, necrophilia, cannibalism, and the preservation of corpse parts as trophies. As a child he was very smart but abused by his companions for the deformities that he had in his hands at birth.

    1. It is a very interesting case. All those childhood issues could be a reason to develop as a psychopath, with an aim to murder.

  16. d) I think a good strategy would have been to take all the patterns that Jack had to kill the women and use it to plan a way to cath him. The patterns like Jack only had killed only 40 years old women, with brown hair and all of the murders were by the same time.

  17. c) It is easier to kill a girl than a men, maybe because of the physical

  18. a) I believe Jack chose Mary Ann Nichols because she was alone and had addictions.
